Rosacea, a long-term skin condition causing facial redness, is believed to affect around one in ten fair-skinned people from northern Europe. Symptoms typically begin to appear after the age of 30 and can vary from short episodes of flushing (where the skin turns red) to permanent redness, visible blood vessels and bumps and pimples.
Unfortunately the causes are currently unknown and there is no permanent cure for rosacea, but there are treatments to help control or reverse its potentially life-disruptive effects. One of these is IPL (intense pulsed light), which can be used to help reduce visible blood vessels and redness.
IPL works by delivering rapid pulses of high intensity light to the area being treated. The light energy is converted into heat, which damages the dilated veins and causes them to shrink so they are no longer visible.
A recent study looked at the effects of treating 16 rosacea patients with IPL – after one treatment, every patient in the study experienced significant improvement and after two treatments, redness decreased by 40% to 60%. The IPL treatment is safe for the skin as it only penetrates a few millimetres deep so it is incapable of causing any damage to other skin structures. Our IPL system also has an intense sub-zero cooling system, which causes a local anaesthetic effect, so the heat sensation is almost non-existent.
